General Info

What You Need to Know:

Skates: You can invest in a pair of skates anytime.  Skylands own pro shop also has skates and skating accessories such as blade covers, skate guards, and clothing available for purchase.  Contact Chris Franco.  They also provide skate sharpening service.  Drop off your skates and they will be sharpened and left at the front desk for pickup.  Drop off by 7:00pm - pick up next  morning after 7:30am.  Most large sporting goods stores also  sell new figure skates and hockey skates.  Skylands Ice World has skates available for rent.  Regardless of whether you rent or purchase your skates, there are important  tips to keep in mind.  Rental skates should be the same size  as your shoes or one size smaller.  When tying skates be sure to start with the toes and work up through the bottom hooks and/or eyes.  Lace skates looser as you progress  to the top hooks to allow enough circulation and appropriate ankle flexibility.  As skaters progess into more advanced levels, custom boots and blades can be ordered through skating manufacturers.  Some reputable names of skate manufacturers include Jackson, Harlick, Riedell, SP-Teri Co, etc.

Helmets are Mandatory: Hats and safety-approved helmets are necessary. Hockey helmet recommended (bike or ski helmet will also do).

Dress in comfortable & warm layers: In general, skaters should wear clothing suitable for activity and that allows for a full range of movement. Suitable skating clothing for girls include tights, leggings, exercise/yoga pants, long sleeved tops, turtlenecks or fitted sweaters, fitted fleece or warm-up jackets. Figure skating dresses and skirts are not necessary at this stage but are of course considered suitable clothing. Suitable skating clothing for boys include track pants, gym pants (provided they are not baggy or loose), sweatshirts, sweaters, fleece jackets or warm-up jackets. Gloves or mittens are strongly recommended. Clothing not suitable for class include jeans, any clothing with loose or baggy pieces, large pieces of jewellery. Clothing with offensive slogans or pictures will not be permitted.

Skate & Helmet Rentals: Skylands Ice World has a wide selection of skates and helmets available for rental purchase. Single-use rentals are available and cost $3.00 per rental. We also offer both skate and helmet rental discount cards. Please visit our customer service desk to purchase rentals and/or discount cards.

Family Discounts: We offer a discount to families with multiple participants. Pay the full price of program registration for the first participant and we’ll give you 10% off each additional family member who registers along with you. Our customer service team at the front desk will be happy to assist you with our family discount plan.
